An SBSAR file is an archive created by Allegorithmic Substance Designer, a program used to create materials for use in 3D content, such as animations, special effects, and video games. It contains a 3D material, such as concrete, carpet, glass, marble, steel, slate, iron, metal, wood, and glass. SBSAR files are used to share materials that have been made by Substance users or are available for download with a Substance Source subscription.

An SBSAR file is the published version of an .SBS file. It is optimized to only store the information required to render the substance it stores and cannot be edited. To publish a substance in Substance Designer, which creates an SBSAR file, follow these steps: Select the SBS file in the Explorer. Click the "Publish" icon or right-click and select Export. Name the archive. Choose the compression and parameters exposure options. Click Ok. SBSAR files can be opened by a variety of programs, including Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Unity, Unreal Engine 4, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, CATIA, and TouchDesigner. You can open an SBSAR file in Substance Designer by selecting File → Open.... You can add SBSAR files into Substance Painter by selecting File → Import resources..., dragging and dropping the files into the "Shelf" pane in Substance Painter, or by placing them in the "materials" folder in the following directory: Documents/Substance Painter/shelf/ The materials stored in the newly added SBSAR files will then be available in the "Shelf" pane in Substance Painter.
