JPEG Interchange Format Image
Classification:raster image file
A JIF file is a raster graphic saved in the JPEG Interchange Format (JIF). It typically stores digital photos and web graphics, much like .JPG and .JPEG image files. JIF files are compressed using lossy Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression to reduce the size of the image.
instruction:
JIF file open in Apache OpenOffice Impress 4
JIF files were more common in the 1990s before the JIF format was superseded by improved variations of the JPEG format. Many Windows and Mac image editors began saving images as JPG and JPEG files, which led to the decrease in usage of JIF files.
Images saved in the JPEG format still typically use the .jpeg or .jpg file extension. However, they may also use one of the following extensions instead:
.JPE - Alternative to the .jpeg and .jpg extensions.
.JFIF - Used for images saved in the JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF), which is a variation of the common JPEG format. It is designed for exchanging a minimal amount of JPEG-encoded data between applications and across computer platforms.
.JFI - Three-letter extension alternative to the four-letter .jfif file extension.
