An HC file is a container file created by VeraCrypt, disk encryption software. It contains a virtual encrypted disk. HC files can be configured to a specific KB, MB, or GB volume size and are password protected.

To create an HC file select Tools → Volume Creation Wizard and click Next. Select the container type, name the file, and choose the location where you would like to save the file. You can open an HC file simply by double-clicking the file and it will open in VeraCrypt. VeraCrypt is a successor to TrueCrypt, an encryption tool for desktop operating systems. TrueCrypt was abandoned by its developers because of security holes that were fixed by another group of developers then repackaged as VeraCrypt. VeraCrypt is free and open source.
