The DSS file format was originally developed under the International Voice Association (IVA), which was comprised of Olympus America, Philips Electronics, and Grundig. DSS files can be converted to more common audio file types, such as .WAV files.

It contains settings for a system, which includes users, groups, shared folders, workgroup, domain, passwords, and file sharing methods. DSS files can be used to restore settings to a system's configuration.

To create a DSS backup configuration file go to Control Panel → Update & Restore and click Back up configuration. The DSS file is then downloaded to your computer. To restore a DSS backup configuration file go to Control Panel → Update & Restore and click Restore configuration.
